The Cains is the Southwest Miramichi's greatest tributary — a hundred and thirteen kilometres of intimate, forest-shrouded water rising in the Bantalor country of eastern New Brunswick and joining the main river at Howard. It is smaller and more intimate than the Miramichi itself, fifteen to forty metres wide over a bed of gravel, rock and large boulders, and famously tea-coloured: the bog-stained water has bred a strain of salmon darker than those of the neighbouring tributaries. The Cains is above all an autumn river. Its reputation rests on the fall run, when a heavy September rain lifts the level and pods of big, late salmon move up off the Miramichi toward the spawning beds. In low summer it runs thin and quiet. Wading is steady on the gravel and rock, with care among the larger boulders and in coloured water.
