About this water

Border country spate river with reliable sea trout runs (June to August, peaking July) — one of Scotland's best-documented sea trout fisheries with consistently strong performance. Autumn salmon run September–November. The Border Esk responds quickly to rain and fishes best on the drop after spates. Night fishing for sea trout in summer is productive; day fishing works too, making this more flexible than purely nocturnal systems. Main pool system concentrates fish — focus effort here and fish through systematically.

Sea trout: Seasonal open (2026) — The Border Esk is one of Scotland's most documented and consistently productive sea trout fisheries. Unlike west-coast and Hebridean rivers, the Border Esk does not face sea-lice pressure and has maintained more stable stocks. Good runs through summer with peaks in June and late summer. Night fishing is the primary method.
