The Blue River is the closest real trout stream to Dallas, under three hours north across the Red River near Tishomingo, a clear, spring-fed river tumbling over granite boulders through state public land. It is a winter fishery only: Oklahoma stocks rainbows from November through March, and they don't survive the summer. From November through February the water at the north end of the area is catch-and-release with barbless flies and lures, which keeps it fishing well between stockings. From April it's a smallmouth river.
