Bear Creek drops out of Big Bear Lake through a steep, trail-poor canyon to the Santa Ana River, and the whole run is a CDFW Wild Trout Water. Its wild rainbows rarely see a fly, because getting to them means a scramble up from the Santa Ana side off Highway 38. The dam above seldom spills, so the creek lives on springs and runoff: lovely in spring, thin by late summer. The 2024 Line Fire burned the surrounding slopes, so expect debris after storms and check forest closures first.
