How to fish it · for brown trout
When
Nymphing can work through most of the day.
Where
Cover mixed depths.
Method
Start with tight-line nymphs and adjust if fish rise or drift higher.
Kit
9 ft #4 rod, floating line, 12 ft tapered leader to 4–5 lb fluoro tippet.
Why this works
⚠️ Water at 18°C — above the brown trout caution line (18°C). Fish dawn or dusk only. Land it fast, wet hands, no air shots. Otherwise poor — water clarity is in the right range.

About this water

The Lena runs clear through limestone gorges below the old mining country of the valley — the industry is mostly gone but the mountains are still there, and the river runs as it always has. Small wild browns in water that barely registers on a gauge, the kind of trout that take a dry fly with total conviction because they've never had reason not to.

Under the surface

The Lena runs from Cantabrian limestone and slate country, a responsive river arriving into the Nalón system. The upper reaches show step-pool through mixed limestone and slate; the descent is steep and response to rainfall immediate. The water carries the blended character of both limestone and slate influences. The middle Lena opens into pool-riffle sequences on mixed cobble-gravel. The pools are productive and hold generations of fishing tradition. The river's character throughout is of a responsive Cantabrian system. The wading demands attention in the upper step-pool sections.

What would change the calculation
Cooler water — back toward the 10–16 °C ideal band — would lift the score and ease welfare.
A drop and clear would lift the flow and clarity scores.

  • TroutThird Sunday of May → 15 August

The Lena feeds the Caudal, itself a Nalón tributary joining well above Puente Peñaflor (Grado) — the Nalón's salmon-zone limit — so it sits in the mountain-zone tributary network. Mountain-zone trout (zona de alta montaña): opens Third Sunday of May, not the general 15 March, minimum size 17cm (vs. 19cm general). Asturian regulation classifies any tributary joining above a salmon river's designated zone-limit point as alta montaña water. Inferred here from confluence position, not a verified lookup against the official cotos map (pescafluvial.asturias.es) — confirm before treating as final.
