Spent Spinner
Generic spent spinner
Trout · GraylingSurface
Wings spread horizontal, body flush in the film, hook visible from below — the generic spent spinner is the most selective pattern scenario in fly fishing. When fish are sipping spent spinners, they are picking up flies with a flat, spent profile and refusing everything with upright wings.
Fish this when
During spinner falls on rivers throughout the season — typically evenings. When fish are rising consistently but refusing upright dries, look for spent spinners on the water and switch to a flush-film pattern.
Why it works
Spent spinners sit flat and flush in the surface film. Fish taking them are looking for a very specific profile — horizontal wings and a flush body. Any fly that doesn't match this is ignored, however realistic in other ways.
