Wet fly
Mallard & Red
Traditional wet fly
Trout · Sea troutSubsurface
A red-bodied companion to the Mallard & Claret — bronze mallard wing over a red seal's fur or wool body, black or claret hackle. A standard spate-river and small-lough wet across Munster, fished singly or as part of a team.
Fish this when
May to July on Munster spate rivers and lowland loughs, on the point or dropper of a wet-fly cast, or singly on smaller rivers.
Why it works
The red body gives more contrast than the claret version on coloured or tea-stained water — a useful alternate when Mallard & Claret is being ignored.
