Grey Wulff
A hatch-matcher in Wulff clothes. The grey-dun colouring — blue-dun hackle, grey poly or deer-hair wing — reads as a natural upwing dun in fast water: an olive, a large dark olive, a mayfly. Where the Royal Wulff is an attractor that asks nothing specific of the hatch, the Grey Wulff is making a considered imitative statement while still floating through the wildest water.
When fish are rising to upwing duns in broken or fast water and a sparse imitative dry would be swamped. On spate rivers during olive hatches, particularly March and April. Also effective on big-water loch drifts when a large upwing pattern is needed — the Wulff floats all day without treatment.
High-floating deer-hair or poly wing stays visible in spray. Grey-dun colour matches the upwing family well without committing to a specific species. In fast water where a size 14 Comparadun would disappear, the Grey Wulff still catches fish.
