The great eastern US drake — a big pale-olive dun whose hatch is a calendar event on the Catskill and Penns Creek rivers.
Fish this when
For a fortnight or so in late May and early June on Catskill and Penns Creek-type freestones, in the evening window when the season's biggest hatch pulls fish up off the bottom.
Why it works
Its bulk and pale-olive colouring match the largest common mayfly on eastern water closely enough that even large, normally cautious trout abandon caution for the size of the meal.
