Trout · Salmon · Sea troutSubsurface

The generic drifting egg — the family every tailwater and Great Lakes tributary angler carries in a dozen colours. Tied as yarn, bead or soft material, the job never changes: a small round morsel presented dead on the bottom.

Fish this when

Any time fish sit below spawning trout, salmon or steelhead, autumn through spring. Dead-drift near the bed under an indicator or on a tight Euro rig.

Why it works

Eggs are the highest-value, lowest-effort food in a spawning river. Fish hold in the seams below the redds and take eggs with little hesitation; size and colour matched to the natural roe seals it.
