Daddy Longlegs
Late-summer killer
ChubSurface
Knotted-pheasant-tail legs on a deer-hair or foam body. Fished dead-drift across glides where naturals are falling, or skated two inches across the surface to provoke a take from chub holding deeper.
Fish this when
Late July through October, particularly calm warm days when natural craneflies blow onto the water. The skated daddy is the one fly that brings the four-pounder out from under cover.
Why it works
The skating presentation triggers a predatory chase response that beetles never do. Chub of two to four pounds launch from holding lies they would not leave for any motionless fly.
