About this water

The Urumea flows through San Sebastián (Donostia), making it the most urban trout-and-sea-trout river in the Basque Country. Despite its proximity to the city, the middle and upper sections retain enough wild spate-river character to reward careful timing after rain. Lower reaches are more compromised by development, but the middle basin still offers practical trout fishing with some migratory sea-trout interest.

In the steep, often pressured Atlantic rivers of the Basque Country, trout opportunities centre on spring olives and other up-wings when flows and colour briefly line up, with caddis and buzzers helping to sustain sport into early and mid-summer, and terrestrials from grassy, wooded margins adding surface food in quieter, recovering reaches.
