Joins the Besaya to form a combined estuary concentrating historical salmon runs now better treated as heritage than practical target. The Rudagüera sporting stretch functions as a trout catch-and-release coto on working days with a maximum of 8 anglers per day — exactly the sort of structured fly water that matters. Older official notices also reference the Caranceja coto. Mixed limestone-sandstone geology creates turquoise water when clear. Three SAIH gauge stations enable precise real-time hydro assessment. 6-hour response generates dramatic spates. Sea trout in later season remain more practically meaningful than salmon for most anglers.
In Cantabria's shorter mountain and foothill trout rivers, fish make the most of spring olives and stoneflies in clear windows between freshets, then switch to evening caddis and small buzzers through the warmer months, with terrestrials becoming a key option in sheltered glides and under tree cover once summer settles in.
