How to fish it · for Rainbow

When

Conditions are not ideal but fishable at Pisciculture de Villette. The ripple should help fish move and feed more confidently. Very warm conditions — trout have a narrower safe zone of cool, oxygen-rich water. Fish only at first light or last light, use barbless hooks, keep fish in the water during release, and stop if fish struggle to recover. Evening can bring a surface rise — have a dry fly or emerger ready.

Where

Start with Booby (8-10) on a fast strip on floating line or static on sinking. Evening can produce explosive surface takes — try a foam beetle or booby on a long leader. Rainbows respond to more active retrieves — try short strips between pauses. When no hatch is visible, a buzzer team — black stripped quill on the point, attractor or pearl-rib on the top dropper — is the default starting point on any UK stillwater.

About this water

One of the oldest salmonid farms in France, working a mill site on the Vaucouleurs west of Paris. Two waters: a quick, easy pond for children, and a small lake for anyone who wants a proper session with their own gear — rainbow, brown and brook trout all stocked. As much a family outing as a fishing trip, with a farm shop selling smoked trout and salmon, koi on show in season, and an old watermill to look round. Not a purist's fly water, but a solid, honest day out an hour from the city.
