The North Raven — Stauffer Creek to a generation of Alberta anglers — is the province's classic spring creek: clear, cold, groundwater-fed meadow water full of wary brown trout (and some brook trout) holding under cut banks and along the weed beds. Stable year-round, it's a technical, sight-fishing river that rewards fine tippets, long drag-free drifts and patience. A small jewel and a restoration success story.
The North Raven — long known as Stauffer Creek — is Alberta's most famous spring creek, a clear, cold, groundwater-fed meadow stream winding through undercut banks and weed beds west of Caroline. Stable flows and constant temperatures grow wary, well-fed brown trout (with brook trout present) and demand a true spring-creek game: fine tippets, drag-free drifts and a careful approach. It's been the focus of decades of habitat restoration and is a technical, rewarding little river.
