How to fish it · for atlantic salmon
When
Mainly August through October per Nevern AA. Grilse arrive from July. Fish on the drop after rain.
Where
Lower pools above the tidal limit at Newport. Nevern AA named beats.
Method
Small doubles 10 to 12 across-and-down on a floating line; small tubes on a sink-tip in spring or coloured water. Fish the named lies in each pool, working systematically before moving on. Mandatory catch-and-release under NRW byelaw — every salmon goes back.
Kit
10 ft #7/8 single-hander or 11 ft switch — small spate scale; double-handers are wasted on these rivers. Floating line plus light sink-tip. 10 to 12 lb fluoro tippet.
Why this works
Good — water clarity is working for you, but time of day is the limiting factor today.

About this water

Small north-Pembrokeshire spate running through the village of Nevern into Newport Bay. The Nevern AA holds the bulk of the fishing and the club tradition is older and steadier than the river is famous. Sewin lead the calendar — early May into the peak in July — with grilse arriving midsummer and the proper salmon late on. A very level-sensitive small river; the gauge and your eye matter more than the diary. Atlantic salmon are under serious conservation pressure — Natural Resources Wales mandates catch-and-release for salmon on all rivers, so all fish must be returned.
