Slow going — pick your moments
River temperature is the limiting factor today, not the flow. Fish dawn or dusk if you go at all, and handle everything with extra care.

About this water

The Musconetcong — the 'Musky' to everyone who fishes it — is northern New Jersey's long, hardworking trout river, running down through Hunterdon and Warren counties with Year-Round Trout Conservation Area reaches at Point Mountain and around Stephens that hold stocked browns and a satisfying number of wild and holdover fish. It's a freestone with a limestone influence in places, fertile and decently hatchy, and the conservation-area water rewards anglers who fish it thoughtfully across the whole year. Like all New Jersey trout water it warms in summer, so the cooler months and the cold-water reaches are where the better fish ride it out. Mind the thermometer and fish the special-reg water with the care it's set aside for.
