Work a bushy searching pattern on the bob and drop a contrasting nymph on the point.
The plan
Plan A

Work a bushy searching pattern on the bob and drop a contrasting nymph on the point.

Plan B

If the main plan is not working, switch to a smaller, more imitative pattern fished slower and deeper. A change of drift angle can also make a difference.

Watch for

Evening tends to be the best period in summer — stay late if you can for a sedge or spinner fall.

Boat — at anchor

Windy conditions suit anchoring in productive areas rather than open-water drifting.

About this water

A small twenty-acre lake in the grounds of Mount Dalton near Rathconrath, stocked as fingerlings that grow on naturally to a pound and a half to three pounds on the rich feeding. Lake olives, sedges and chironomids hatch here, and the terrestrials blow on in numbers, so it is nearly always worth a visit. Midland Fisheries Group permit; boat and fly only, and the boat wants booking ahead through C. Gibson Brabazon, down the private avenue off the Mullingar–Ballymahon road.

Why this score
  • Wind conditions (windy) are not ideal for this water.
  • High temperatures may push fish deeper and reduce surface activity.
  • Terrestrials are in their seasonal window, boosting the chance of targeted feeding.
