Major northern salmon and sea-trout river system in Troms, draining the Målselvvassdraget to the Malangen fjord near Målsnes. A serious destination river with a strong Arctic-adjacent identity, famous for the thundering Målselvfossen salmon ladder near Bardufoss. Regulation is zone-based: the season starts 15 June, with different closing dates downstream of the waterfall, upstream of it, and below the Bardu–Målselv confluence. 2026 carries strict quotas, mandatory catch reporting, equipment disinfection, and release-only rules for sea-char and kelts. Managed by the river-owner partnership (SUM); beats bookable via Elveguiden and local zone cards. Present as a destination river where local zone rules MUST be checked before fishing. Atlantic salmon are managed under national and river-specific regulations — daily and seasonal quotas, size limits and mid-season evaluations apply, and catch-and-release is widely practised; check current rules before fishing.
