Målselva

Troms (Northern Norway), NOspatemixed143 kmSalmon river

Major northern salmon and sea-trout river system in Troms, draining the Målselvvassdraget to the Malangen fjord near Målsnes. A serious destination river with a strong Arctic-adjacent identity, famous for the thundering Målselvfossen salmon ladder near Bardufoss. Regulation is zone-based: the season starts 15 June, with different closing dates downstream of the waterfall, upstream of it, and below the Bardu–Målselv confluence. 2026 carries strict quotas, mandatory catch reporting, equipment disinfection, and release-only rules for sea-char and kelts. Managed by the river-owner partnership (SUM); beats bookable via Elveguiden and local zone cards. Present as a destination river where local zone rules MUST be checked before fishing.

Check locally

Resident brown trout and Arctic char present; salmon and sea trout are the primary quarry. Non-anadromous fishing above the waterfall opens 1 June.

Tactical notes

Fish Målselva like a major northern salmon system rather than a quick-rotation spate stream. The Målselvfossen falls is the migration hinge and a key regulatory boundary — pick a zone by timing: downstream water for fresh fish early, upstream water once fish have run through. Read water height and fish movement before agonising over fly choice.

Regulations

Fiskeravgift (national fee) PLUS local SUM zone permit required for anadromous fishing. Season opens 15 June. Mandatory catch reporting and equipment disinfection. 2026 quotas are zone-specific and subject to mid-season change — confirm before you travel. Sea-char and kelts release-only; prawn/fish-fry baits and gaffing prohibited.
