About this water

Below the cold, famous West Branch TMA up at Riverton, the Farmington keeps going — gathering the East Branch and the Pequabuck and a good deal of summer warmth on its way down through Collinsville and Tariffville. This lower river is a different animal from the tailwater: bigger, broader, warmer, with wild and holdover browns and rainbows that ride out the season where they can find cool water, and a sturdy population of smallmouth in the bargain. The hatches are still there in the cooler months, and the streamer fishing through the deeper Tariffville water can be very good. Think of it as the Farmington's freestone half — cracking in spring and fall, best left to the bass when the lower river runs warm.
