A northwesterly has held for most of a day, running colder than the water (7°C air against 11°C water). The end it blows into is taking that chilled surface water, so try the sheltered north-western end instead — off the back of the wind, where the undertow returns food along the bottom. That chill sits in the top of the water, though, and the bed is slower to feel it — on a bottom bait it is the undertow, not the temperature, that puts you at this end. Treat it as a tiebreaker between good swims rather than an override — features and angling pressure usually count for more.

About this water

Hir means long, and it's the most literally descriptive name in the Teifi Pools group — a narrower, more elongated lake than its rounder neighbours, which changes how you fish it more than you'd think. Wild browns, same headwater character as Egnant and Teifi itself, but the shape gives you more bank to cover and more variety of water in a single visit. Same club, same access up through Tregaron, same exposed, weather-driven fishing that defines the whole plateau. If you're working the pools as a circuit, Hir is worth a longer stop than its size alone would suggest — the shoreline does more work than the acreage implies.
