Lago Todos los Santos

Lago Todos los Santos — Don Taufik (boat moored on the shores of Lago Todos los Santos)

Locals call it the Lake of the Emerald Waters, and the name undersells it — glacial melt off Tronador and the surrounding volcanoes gives Todos los Santos an improbable, almost lit-from-within turquoise, framed by dense temperate rainforest with barely a building in sight.

How to fish it · for Rainbow
When
No strong hatch signals at the moment — general searching tactics should work best. The ripple is helpful — fish should move onto the feed and a slow-drifted team or single wet will cover water well.
Where
Set up a broadside drift and cover the water systematically. Work a bushy searching pattern on the bob and drop a contrasting nymph on the point.
The plan
Plan A

Set up a broadside drift and cover the water systematically. Work a bushy searching pattern on the bob and drop a contrasting nymph on the point.

Plan B

If the main plan is not working, switch to a smaller, more imitative pattern fished slower and deeper. A change of drift angle can also make a difference.

Watch for

Evening tends to be the best period in summer — stay late if you can for a sedge or spinner fall.

Boat — drift

A gentle ripple is ideal for drifting — broadside drift covering the wind lanes should be productive.

About this water

Locals call it the Lake of the Emerald Waters, and the name undersells it — glacial melt off Tronador and the surrounding volcanoes gives Todos los Santos an improbable, almost lit-from-within turquoise, framed by dense temperate rainforest with barely a building in sight. It sits inside Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park and is reached mostly by boat from the Petrohué landing, which keeps pressure low and the shoreline wild. Brown and rainbow trout cruise the drop-offs and river mouths, and a streamer stripped past a sunken log here can produce a fish that makes the whole trip. Wind builds through the afternoon on open water, so mornings tend to fish calmer and safer than the middle of the day.
