About this water

Nahuel Huapi is less a lake than an inland sea — a vast, glacially carved basin ringed by peaks above Bariloche, its arms and bays running for kilometres between forested shoreline and open, wind-scoured water. Brook, brown and rainbow trout patrol the drop-offs and rocky points where baitfish concentrate, and a Woolly Bugger or Zonker stripped along a drop-off or fished from a drifting boat will draw fish that rarely see a fly close to shore. Weather changes fast here: a flat morning can turn into whitecaps within the hour, so shore and boat access need planning around wind direction rather than a fixed itinerary. It fishes best worked methodically along structure rather than blind-casting the open water, and a local boat operator who knows which bay is sheltered on a given day is worth more than any fly pattern.
