Huechulafquen sits directly beneath Volcán Lanín, and the view alone — a near-perfect cone rising over deep glacial water — is reason enough to fish it. Trolling near the river mouths, particularly where the Chimehuín drains the lake, has long been the most productive method for the big browns holding in cooler water close to the inflows, though streamer work from shore or a drifting boat takes fish too on a Muddler Minnow or Matuka worked past structure. Trolling is permitted across most of the lake, with a specific exclusion around the Chimehuín and Arroyo Blanco mouths to protect spawning fish. Felt soles are banned under current regulation to slow the spread of didymo, so pack alternative wading gear. Conditions on open water shift quickly, and a guide with a boat remains the most reliable way to fish it properly.
