How to fish it · for Trout
When
No strong hatch signals at the moment — general searching tactics should work best. Calm conditions may limit drift fishing — consider buzzers or dry fly if fish are rising.
Where
With limited drift, anchor or fish static from sheltered positions. Work a bushy searching pattern on the bob and drop a contrasting nymph on the point. In the calm, a single dry fly or a slowly-fished nymph tends to out-fish an active retrieve. When no hatch is visible, a buzzer team — black stripped quill on the point, attractor or pearl-rib on the top dropper — is the default starting point on any UK stillwater.
The plan
Plan A

With limited drift, anchor or fish static from sheltered positions. Work a bushy searching pattern on the bob and drop a contrasting nymph on the point. In the calm, a single dry fly or a slowly-fished nymph tends to out-fish an active retrieve. When no hatch is visible, a buzzer team — black stripped quill on the point, attractor or pearl-rib on the top dropper — is the default starting point on any UK stillwater.

Plan B

If the main plan is not working, switch to a smaller, more imitative pattern fished slower and deeper. A change of drift angle can also make a difference.

Watch for

Keep an eye on changing conditions — wind shifts and cloud breaks can trigger short feeding spells.

Bank

Flat calm suits bank fishing near features — points, weed beds, and inflows where fish patrol.

About this water

General Carrera — shared with Argentina, where it's known as Lago Buenos Aires — is one of the largest lakes in South America, an enormous sheet of glacial water so clear and blue that boat trips to the marble caves near Puerto Río Tranquilo have become an attraction in their own right. That clarity and scale shape the fishing: big brown and rainbow trout cruise the drop-offs, river mouths and wind-exposed points, and covering water from a boat matters more here than almost anywhere else in the region. Woolly Buggers, bunny leeches and zonkers stripped along structure are the standard flies. The lake can turn from glassy to genuinely dangerous within an hour when the wind comes up off the ice fields, so respect for conditions matters as much as fly choice.
