Severe drought restrictions (crise) in force

The Bassin Vienne amont zone (Dept 87) is at crise — the second-highest French drought tier — under a préfectoral arrêté. Fishing itself is not named as prohibited, but water is severely restricted and flows are likely very low; fish with care and check locally.

Arrêté préfectoral n°37065

Temporary notices from official orders and recent fishery reports — they clear automatically once out of date. Always confirm locally before travelling.

How to fish it · for Pike
When
Pike are under severe thermal stress. Post-release mortality is high. Defer the session until water cools below 19°C.
Where
Water at 27.5°C. This is the line where catch-and-release kills pike. Do not fish for them today.
The plan
Plan A

Water at 27.5°C. This is the line where catch-and-release kills pike. Do not fish for them today.

Plan B

Fish early and late, try deeper during the heat of the day with a fast-sinking line.

Watch for

Watch for Sedge towards evening — this could be the best window of the day.

Either bank or boat

Good ripple suits both bank and boat. Bank: work inflows, dam walls, and points. Boat: broadside drift covering wind lanes.

Pike fly box

More balanced than the mountain-river pack. French nymphing still matters, but there is more room for dries, spiders and general searching flies.

About this water

Vassivière is a thousand hectares of reservoir sitting at 650 metres on the Millevaches granite plateau, which sounds like trout country but honestly is not — the lake is second category and the real quarry is pike, pike-perch and perch. The predator fishing here is as good as any pike-fly venue in France, and there is an honest-to-God fishing culture built around it: guides, competitions (the Mercury Fishing Cup is held here), float-tube fly schools, and the sort of tackle shops that actually stock the flies you need rather than the ones the catalogue told them to stock. The shoreline is indented and forested — forty-five kilometres of bank with endless coves — and you can fish it from shore, boat or float tube and find your own water without trouble. The trout population is incidental. Come for the pike.
