Eel River system
One of California's defining wild steelhead and salmon waters: big, moody, rain-driven, and far too important to reduce to a bite score. The mainstem, South Fork and Middle Fork each need reach-specific handling, but the product rule is simple: closure status first, then falling/clearing water, then angler advice. This should feel like a recovery-aware steelhead page, not a hype page.
Steelhead (catch-and-release wild fish)
Winter steelhead when the river is open and dropping after rain
Methods
- •Swinging broad winter steelhead runs
- •Indicator nymphing where legal and appropriate
- •Watching river colour after storm pulses
Recommended flies
Seasons
trout
1 September – 30 April
Low-flow rules apply; check exact reach, CDFW current regulations and North Coast low-flow status before fishing.
Tactical notes
Do not treat the Eel as one uniform venue. Reach splitting is the next enrichment task: mainstem, South Fork, Middle Fork and Van Duzen.
Regulations
CDFW North Coast low-flow rules apply from September 1 through April 30. Mainstem, South Fork and Middle Fork thresholds differ; check the exact reach.
