How to fish it · for Brown Trout
When
Through the open trout season. Spring olives April through May; sedges through summer evenings; small dark flies into autumn.
Where
Pool tails and pocket water through the Haut-Rhin valley. Vosges freestone — cool clear water, intimate scale.
Method
Upstream dry to risers; dry-dropper through the riffles. The water reads clear — long leader, fine tippet. Move slowly, cast accurately.
Kit
9 ft #4 — French freestone default. Floating line, 12 ft leader to 4 to 5 lb fluoro. Studded boots.
Why this works
Water at 22.4°C. This is the line where catch-and-release kills brown trout. Do not fish for them today.

Brown Trout fly box

More balanced than the mountain-river pack. French nymphing still matters, but there is more room for dries, spiders and general searching flies.

Permits & access
Permit required — see local rules.
  • Alsace AAPPMA permits
  • Fly-only and no-kill parcours common
  • Single barbless hooks required.

About this water

30 km of 1st-category Vosges mountain river from Oberbruck to Masevaux. Strict fly-only, no-kill, barbless-hook regulation protects local-strain wild trout. Granitic freestone with excellent Baetis and caddis. Every fish represents generations of wild breeding. Spring through early autumn. Check Haut-Rhin regulations for permits and access.

Hatches & food

In Vosges granite catchments, trout in cool freestone streams feed on early and spring olives once levels settle after winter, daytime stoneflies over clean, stony runs, a broad band of evening caddis supported by rich bug life in the region, steady small buzzer activity on mild days, and terrestrials strongest where the river is hemmed in by forest.
