A western Gipuzkoa trout river offering clear water and productive wild brown trout habitat across 52 km. Salmon once ran here but no longer do, and it is fished for its trout. A spate river that responds to rain within about four hours, with mixed geology giving varied pool and run habitat. The season runs from 1 April to 31 July, and the no-kill stretch from the Altzola dam up to the Oñati confluence stays open to 30 September. Low summer flows can warm the lower river past 20 °C, so check the water temperature before fishing late in the season.
In the steep, often pressured Atlantic rivers of the Basque Country, trout opportunities centre on spring olives and other up-wings when flows and colour briefly line up, with caddis and buzzers helping to sustain sport into early and mid-summer, and terrestrials from grassy, wooded margins adding surface food in quieter, recovering reaches.
