A dam sets this river's temperature, not the weather, so it can shift several degrees within hours when the release changes. Measured 5 km from the gauge. It also warms as it runs away from the dam.

About this water

Atlanta's own trout water: the Chattahoochee where it runs through the National Recreation Area at Cochran Shoals, Powers Island and Paces Mill, along the I-285 Perimeter. From November to mid-May it's Delayed Harvest water, stocked with rainbows and fished catch-and-release on single-hook artificials, and a lunch-hour session is a real thing. The flow is a dam schedule, from Buford upstream and the Morgan Falls re-regulation dam just above the reach, so check releases before you wade. By June the river has warmed past what trout tolerate; treat it as a cool-season fishery and leave it to the bass in summer.

  • Acidic metamorphic
Conservation note

Rainbows are stocked for the Delayed Harvest season, and the stockings may include browns. This reach holds no self-sustaining trout: summer water passes 20 °C on most days, and the wild brown population belongs to the cold tailwater above Morgan Falls. Shoal bass, other black bass, striped bass and carp share the river and take over in summer; none is scored.
