About this water

The Bogachiel — the 'Bogey' to everyone who fishes it — is the workhorse of the Quillayute system: accessible, productive, and busy, the river a lot of anglers cut their winter-steelhead teeth on. It takes an early hatchery winter run, which spreads the pressure and gives the swung-fly angler something to practice on, and then the wild fish push through later in the season when the crowds thin. Rain-fed off the Olympic foothills, it rises on the storms and comes back into shape at a sensible pace — not the flashy early drop of the Sol Duc, not the slow gray patience of the glacial rivers. The gauge is a stage reading, so fish the trend: as it tops out and starts to fall and the color drops out, the swing comes alive. Swing intruders and tubes through the classic runs, mind your hatchery-versus-wild rules, and accept that on a good drop you won't have the river to yourself.
