Severe drought restrictions (crise) in force

The 3. Secteur Aude amont (hors axe réalimenté) zone (Dept 11) is at crise — the second-highest French drought tier — under a préfectoral arrêté. Fishing itself is not named as prohibited, but water is severely restricted and flows are likely very low; fish with care and check locally.

Arrêté préfectoral n°37639

Temporary notices from official orders and recent fishery reports — they clear automatically once out of date. Always confirm locally before travelling.

More balanced than the mountain-river pack. French nymphing still matters, but there is more room for dries, spiders and general searching flies.

About this water

The upper Aude at Axat tumbles through limestone gorge where fishing is secondary to the sheer drama of the place. Designated no-kill, fly-only, barbless stretch. Wild brown trout. Technical pocket-water fishing in clear flows. Spring through early autumn offers consistent opportunity. Modest gradient makes wading workable. Permits required; check Aude prefectural regulations.

Hatches & food

No emergence timing has been documented for the upper river, but OFB monitoring at Escouloubre and Axat confirms a diverse stonefly, caddis and mayfly fauna (including Perla, Isoperla, Rhyacophila, Sericostoma and Ephemerella) — direct evidence of a rich food base at these specific stations, not a calendar for the whole upper Aude.

What would change the calculation
Cooler water — back toward the 10–16 °C ideal band — would lift the score and ease welfare.
