Allandale Tarn is small-water fishing in southern Scotland, and small water has a way of concentrating the mind. You can see most of it from the bank, which sounds like an advantage until you realise the trout can see most of you too. Mixed geology, stocked fish, and the kind of dour weather that the regulars actually pray for — a bit of cloud, a bit of breeze, the surface broken just enough to give a fish confidence. It fishes best when it's least pleasant to stand there, which is a joke the place plays on everyone equally. Keep low, keep the cast tidy, and let the fly do the work.
