How to fish it · for rainbow
When
Current conditions suit Embalse de Arguis (Río Isuela coto deportivo) well for summer tactics. The ripple should help fish move and feed more confidently.
Where
Start with Booby (8-10) on a fast strip on floating line or static on sinking. Rainbows respond to more active retrieves — try short strips between pauses. If that does not produce, switch depth or speed before changing the pattern entirely. When no hatch is visible, a buzzer team — black stripped quill on the point, attractor or pearl-rib on the top dropper — is the default starting point on any UK stillwater.
The plan
Plan A

Start with Booby (8-10) on a fast strip on floating line or static on sinking. Rainbows respond to more active retrieves — try short strips between pauses. If that does not produce, switch depth or speed before changing the pattern entirely. When no hatch is visible, a buzzer team — black stripped quill on the point, attractor or pearl-rib on the top dropper — is the default starting point on any UK stillwater.

Plan B

Fish early and late, try deeper during the heat of the day with a fast-sinking line.

Watch for

Evening tends to be the best period in summer — stay late if you can for a sedge or spinner fall.

Either bank or boat

Good ripple suits both bank and boat. Bank: work inflows, dam walls, and points. Boat: broadside drift covering wind lanes.

About this water

The most practical fly day from Zaragoza, and honest about what it is: a stocked coto on the Isuela reservoir under the limestone shoulders of the Sierra de Guara, an hour up the road from the city. Nobody will mistake it for a wild Pyrenean stream, but a stocked reservoir fished well on a buzzer or a slow nymph is a real day's fishing, and on a spring morning before the heat comes off the rock it can be a good one. Rainbows make up most of the stock; the odd brown turns up. It is the right answer when the mountain rivers are blown out, or simply too far for the hours you have.
