- Fishing hours are 5:00 am–midnight only (no all-night fishing)
- Within 200 m of the marked landmark posts at the river mouths it is FLY FISHING ONLY (no trolling/jigging); anchored-boat fly fishing is allowed in the Tongariro and Tauranga-Taupō mouths
- Spin fishing is permitted on the open lake outside the fly-only mouth zones
- 6 trout/day; 35 cm minimum; felt-soled boots prohibited
- A licence does not grant access to Lake Rotoaira, Motutaiko Island or other private land
