A large spate river formed at Omagh by the confluence of the Drumragh and Camowen, flowing north-west to Sion Mills where it meets the Derg to form the River Mourne. One of the most prolific trout systems in Northern Ireland, and a major salmon and sea trout river in its own right. Omagh Anglers control much of the fishing — from above Omagh down past Newtownstewart, taking in the Drumragh, Camowen, Strule and Owenkillew — though some stretches remain privately held. Salmon arrive from mid-May, sea trout run June–August, and brown trout fishing is good throughout on a medium-sized, well-accessed river. Atlantic salmon are managed under DAERA and Loughs Agency conservation byelaws, with mandatory catch-and-release on many waters; check current rules before fishing.
