Millbuies Loch sits on sandstone ground in Moray, a wooded, sheltered stillwater that fishes a good deal more kindly than the bare hill lochs to the south. The sandstone catchment gives it a bit more life than the acid waters, and the stocked rainbows and browns feed accordingly. The tree-lined banks cut the worst of the wind, which is pleasant for you and a problem too — a sheltered surface can go glassy and switch the fish off. Find the corner where the breeze is working and you'll find the fish. It's a comfortable, civilised sort of place to fish, which after a session on the open hill feels like luxury.
