How to fish it · for atlantic salmon
When
All day is fishable. Peaks around mid-morning (10-12) and late afternoon (4-6pm). A change in light — cloud passing over the sun, or the first shadow reaching the water — can trigger a take.
Where
Focus on the slower water at pool edges, inside bends, and behind large boulders. Fish won't hold in the main current at this height. Streamy water that's normally too shallow can hold fish in high water.
Method
Medium-paced swing, fly fishing just below the surface. Fish are willing to move — a steady broadside presentation across the current is ideal. Vary speed through the swing.. Slow intermediate or light sink-tip. Small-medium: size 8-12 doubles, small tubes. Fish are willing to move — let them come to the fly.
Kit
13 ft #8/9 double-hander in spate, 10 ft #8 single in low water. Floating line plus a fast-sink tip. 12–15 lb fluoro tippet.
Why this works
The signs are strong. Water starting to fall after a rise — early stages of coming into shape. Still coloured but fining — improving conditions. 13.4°C — in the ideal taking range for summer salmon. Conditions are moving in the right direction and should be fishable soon if not already.

About this water

The Mabou flows through Inverness County to the Gulf of St. Lawrence — Cape Breton river country, with a salmon-fishing tradition that runs as deep as the Gaelic heritage. Spate-driven: fast to colour after rain, fast to clear, with fish that run on any decent lift and rest briefly in the pools before pushing on. Summer grilse dominate July and August; multi-sea-winter fish are present in early season. Local knowledge matters on the Mabou more than most rivers. The pools have names, and the names have history behind them.
