Elsi sits in the Gwydir Forest above Betws-y-Coed, reached by a forestry track that climbs just enough to make you feel you've earned it, and it's the biggest of the club's hill lakes by a fair margin — big enough that a stiff breeze can put a proper wave on it, which the wild browns seem to appreciate. It's popular with dog-walkers and mountain bikers too, so don't expect much solitude on a summer Saturday, but fish it early or in the shoulder months and it's still a proper wild-trout water — small, dark fish holding along the margins, picking off whatever the wind blows onto the surface. Straightforward, well-trodden, and honest fishing.
