Bychan is Welsh for small, and the name doesn't oversell it — this is one of three hill lakes above Betws-y-Coed that the local angling club has quietly looked after for generations, easy to miss on a map and easier still to have to yourself on a weekday. The wild browns here run modest and dark, sharp-finned fish that have never seen a stocking bucket, and they rise the way small upland trout do everywhere: fussy, fast, gone if you flub the first cast. There's no boat, no clubhouse, just a walk up from the road and a lake that rewards patience more than gear. Bring waders, bring midge spray, bring low expectations about size, and you'll leave happy.
