About this water

A tributary of the Little Brosna, draining the eastern face of the Slieve Bloom Mountains through Kinnitty and Birr to the Shannon system. The Camcor is primarily a wild brown trout river, but it carries a curious distinction: from mid-July, it receives a run of Croneen trout — large, sea-run brown trout from Lough Derg that push deep into the Shannon tributaries on summer floods. The Croneen (from the Irish for 'little brown one') is genetically distinct, growing up to 6 lb or more, and is one of the ecological highlights of the Shannon system. The river is fly-only on most beats. Autumn runs, when the fish move, require high water; a summer drought means no Croneen. Plan accordingly and fish it as a bonus rather than a certainty.
