Stonefly dry
Large Stonefly Dry
TroutSurface
A dark brown, high-floating dry built to survive the fast, broken water of an alpine freestone — dense elk hair and a stiff hackle keep it riding through pocket water where a delicate pattern would drown in the first riffle. Fished as the early-summer Perlidae emergence gets underway, when trout key on the season's biggest available meal.
Fish this when
Late spring and early summer, in the two or three weeks the large stoneflies are hatching. Fish it hard against boulders and along foam lines in fast pocket water — the take is usually immediate and unsubtle.
