The Talachulitna — everyone says 'the Tal' — is a piece of south-central Alaska fly-fishing history: a clear tributary of the Skwentna and Susitna west of Cook Inlet that was one of the first Alaskan rivers given over to catch-and-release trophy management, and it still rewards a fly-in with wild rainbows, Dolly Varden, grayling and a strong run of kings and silvers. It's clearer and more wadeable than the big lowland salmon rivers, which makes it a lovely swing-and-strip and dry-fly river for the rainbows and grayling, with the salmon runs setting the rhythm through the summer. Fly-in access, bear country, and a conservation pedigree that means handling fish well is the whole ethic here. Fish the smolt and egg windows for the rainbows, enjoy the grayling on dries, respect the king run, and check the orders before you book.
