A workmanlike North Coast steelhead river near Arcata, with Ruth Dam a long way up top and a free-flowing lower river that answers to the rain. It's known for hatchery winter steelhead alongside wild fish, and it carries ESA-listed coho and Chinook in the system besides. Like all these coastal rivers the whole thing is timing: it bumps up and colors after a storm, then drops and clears, and you fish it on the way down. Read the gauge, wait for shape, and keep a light hand on the listed runs that share the water.
