Loch Hope sits in the far north-west corner of Sutherland, under Ben Hope, in some of the emptiest country in Britain. It is an unusual Highland loch in that it runs over limestone rather than granite, which gives the water a clarity you will not see on most other Highland lochs and makes genuine sight-fishing for salmon and sea trout possible along its shallower margins. Salmon run up from the short River Hope below the loch from June onwards; sea trout follow from July. Both respond classically to wind and weather — a falling barometer and a steady westerly ripple puts fish on the move, and on a good summer evening the loch fishes with the kind of predictability that rewards methodical work. Boats and permits are tightly managed through the Altnaharra and Ben Hope estates, and access is limited — book well ahead. The place itself is what people remember longest. Few roads, few houses, few other anglers, and the quiet that only empty country produces.
