River Ewe / Loch Maree
Model this as a River Ewe-Loch Maree system, not just a river. The Ewe runs gin-clear about two miles out of Loch Maree near Poolewe — a four-rod river of four beats and 13 pools, best suited to a double-handed rod and normally fished with a ghillie. Until the 1990s the system was one of Scotland's most famous sea-trout fisheries; the sea-trout stock then collapsed and large sea trout are now scarce. Sell the place honestly — its beauty and its surviving salmon relevance — not false abundance.
Atlantic salmon (sea trout much reduced)
June-September (salmon in summer)
Methods
- •fly (double-handed, ghillie advised)
- •dapping (Loch Maree)
Recommended flies
Seasons
salmon
spring – autumn
Loch Maree / River Ewe salmon season runs spring to autumn, with most salmon taken in the summer months; sea trout traditionally arrive from June. Dapping is a traditional Loch Maree technique. Strict catch-and-release. A River Ewe Salmon Fishery District regulation prohibits natural prawns and shrimps (or parts of them) as baits/lures. Verify current dates and access routes with the estate/agent.
Tactical notes
Two contrasting fisheries: the short, gin-clear River Ewe — four beats, 13 pools, a double-handed rod and usually a ghillie — and the big Loch Maree, traditionally drift-fished and dapped from a boat. Salmon are the realistic target and run in summer; the famous large sea trout have largely gone, so set expectations honestly. Natural prawn and shrimp baits are prohibited by district regulation.
