How to fish it · for grayling
When
Autumn through late autumn — September through November prime. The Ariège is one of the better grayling waters in the French Pyrenees.
Where
Faster gravel runs and the heads of riffles in the middle and lower river. Deeper glide tails as autumn cold pushes fish deeper.
Method
Euro-nymphing through the deeper pockets is the daily default. Switch to dries on autumn afternoons.
Kit
10 ft #3 nymphing rod for the deep pockets; 9 ft #4 for dries. 4 to 5 lb fluoro tippet, 12 ft leader.
Why this works
Good conditions. Temperature is favourable (100), Feeding time is weakest (10).

About this water

The Ariège cuts through the heart of the Pyrenees from high mountains through Luzenac and Foix. Mixed granite headwaters and limestone foothills support wild brown trout — 1st-category water with multiple tributaries. Luzenac section has designated no-kill fly-fishing beat (marked 'PARCOURS NO KILL', free permit on application). Higher waters best early season; lower sections hold consistent trout.
