The Åbyälven drains the boreal forest of northern Norrbotten into the Gulf of Bothnia — an undammed river running through sparse spruce country under the midnight sun. Atlantic salmon enter from late June and run steadily through August. The deep pools hold fish through the season; the best fly water is the tail-out below the pools where the current narrows and fish can be approached on a floating line. Arctic char hold in the coldest sections; brown trout and grayling are present for those whose attention doesn't stay fixed on salmon. A serious northern river that hasn't been over-discussed. Granite-based upland geology shapes this river. Atlantic salmon are managed under national rules (Havs- och vattenmyndigheten) — quotas, size limits and catch-and-release apply and differ between Baltic and west-coast rivers; check current rules before fishing.
